Dear carrot, Sometimes, I get excited to see you growing so big, and then I pull you to see how big you really are, and you're not that big, but I eat you anyway. The end.

Yallo! While I have slacked off in documenting my gardening endeavors, I still have plants that are alive and well. Here are a few samples:

Remember my little brazilian maraccas babies? Only two of them made it, but they are lookin quite beautiful.

Clematis Tangutica is slow coming; it's rather a dainty thing.

Figuring out how to make to most of a small plot of land led me to square-foot gardening. Apparently the best number of carrots for one square foot is sixteen.

Some of my favorite photos

I can't tell you how much joy these little seedlings bring when I look at them. These photos are some of my favorites. These little things just give me hope; they are so little now but have so much to offer, we just have to be patient.

Imperfections = Beauty

This seedling does not look like the others. Some tiny clumps of soil, etc. were stuck to it when it sprouted and so my little Quasi is off to an unfortunate start. I think, however, he will be just fine. Nope, Quasi is a he/she. Heshe. Heesh. Interesting how we attach gender to things that don't have it; or both, I guess.

My First Little One Is Here!

Eeeeek! The first seed has sprouted! I was about to give up my first batch for lost, but I happened to check them tonight and... beautiful. I can't help but stare at this picture. I feel like I just gave birth to a child, and I just love it so much. Regina Spektor is playing on my ipod, and I feel that she might be the soundtrack to my first real garden.

The First Wave

Got my seeds in the mail earlier this week (shout out to Jon for buying them for me for Valentine's Day:) and the planting has begun! This first planting session is Porphyrocoma Brazilian Fireworks Maracas. I bought all my seeds from parkseeds.com and so far so good. Got here within a week and I like their packaging.

So I decided to go green this year, aka using tin cans my husband was saving so he could recycle them sometime. Poked a bunch of holes in the bottoms, filled them with seed starting soil, put in my little babies, and watered them. I at first tried to water from the bottom up, but I think my holes were too small cuz not much water was getting absorbed. Since I had already put them on top of the fridge (apparently the warmth helps your seeds germinate faster), I yelled for my husband to stop playing Donkey Kong and help me get the cans with soil and seed and the tray of water off. We only spilled some of the water. So, hopefully these seeds will germinate in 4-5 days (random website please don't be getting my hopes up to soon), and I'll have my first seedlings of the season.

This Is It

Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to grow a garden. From scratch/seed. None of this buying plants already grown. Too easy (and expensive). Many times I've tried, frequently to end in tragedy. I left the seedlings out in the sun with the plastic cover on and they all wilted (this was my first attempt, and I was terribly devastated), I forgot to water them and they all died (whoops!), joined a community garden but got hit by a car on my bike and was out of comission for a while (bike too, so no transportation), you get the picture. This time, tho, I'm going to do it. I've got it all planned out; done my research about which plants will do best on my little patio, sketched out the lay of the land, I got this. I have a good feeling about this year, because I think I'm on my way towards one of my life goals: be an awesome gardener.
